A Summer day at a great auction house is a thing to behold, it’s like a great car show but at the end of the day, you get to drive home in one of the cars! And Historics Auctions are an excellent event and this one will be no exception. The SVA has chosen our favourite 5 cars from the event, 3 for serious owners or collectors and 2 for ‘Investorcollectors’ those wealthy people behind the scenes that buy the car to hide away in a garage for its pure asset value to monetise in the future.

Given that Classic & Collectible cars continue to increase in general values and do so ahead of Gold and other reliable assets, they are a desirable investment. (Please note: Investorcollecting requires considerable research in a vehicle, the model and its provenance, we recommend gaining expert and professional advice before investing in cars)

Our first choice is this:

1972 Jensen Interceptor Mk.III £29-£36K Guide price

SVA Says: These cars are rare and ones in fine condition reach £50,000 and higher and will in our view continue to rise, making this car a good classic and ‘Investorcollector’ car… Spares for engines etc should not pose too much issue but windows, especially that surrounding back window can be, so network widely with other enthusiasts and join the Jenson Owners Club.

Jenson motors are the British Muscle car of the day along with DB7 Astons

Manufactured in 1972,  this wonderful example is presented in good order throughout and is offered in black with a black leather interior. Having been in the current ownership for five years,  this Jensen has been treated to maintenance work where necessary including a new heater matrix, a NOS vacuum switcher and a Fenair air conditioning kit fitted; the engine bay wiring was also replaced, with other electrical parts replaced where necessary including a new window motor and mechanism on the driver’s door and a reconditioned oil gauge. As such,  this Interceptor is in good running and driving condition. The paintwork retains a deep shine and the chromework is bright. Offered with a good history file including old MoT test certificates, various bills, invoices of maintenance work and a UK V5C registration document.

1997 Mercedes-Benz 320 SL £22-£30K Guide price

SVA Says: The 300-320SL is a sublime classic car to own and drive, it is a mile-munching and very affordable Grand Tourer. It still draws stares out and about and his very affordable to own and maintain, the Germans affectionately called it ‘Built like brick sh*thouse’, which they are. Superbly engineered very reliable and relatively simple when not in the 600/exotic range. If you really want to go silly, there is an ex-Sultan of Brunie SL600 for sale in the auction too.. Hand-built engine and bespoke paint though will mean higher than average maintenance, be aware!

This stunning low mileage R129 Mercedes-Benz SL is supplied in Azurite Blue with Mushroom leather trim, a later facelift example now with only its third owner from new. Specified by Lancaster Europa Mercedes-Benz to include walnut steering wheel and gear shift and heated leather seats as options which can be found specified on the original invoice and data card. Supplied with the original service booklet including the dealer supplied complimentary pen, demonstrating a comprehensive servicing history this is a fabulous example to own a desirable late facelift example with an incredible 20,000 miles from new. Our vendor has recently fitted a modern stereo head unit enabling the car to utilise Apple car play and access SMART apps thus providing a thoroughly modern cabin including Bluetooth telephone. Specified in the best colour combination for these appreciating classics, supplied with the desirable hardtop viewing is highly recommended.

Our third choice is both Owner classic and ‘Investorcollector’ material

1987 Porsche 928 S4 An unbelievable £14-£17K Guide price

SVA Says: This is THE icon of the 80’s muscle cars, as seen by millions in ‘Risky Business’ with Tom Cruise. That movie used three cars and the primary close-up one sold at auction for a cool $1.9m Find out more That said, this is a nice car and with a very comfortable estimate guide price, remember though these cars are not cheap to maintain! Its not a 924 or 944, this is a V8 monster that eats fuel and servicing-repair costs.. On the other hand, when you bring this car out for a drive in the Cotswolds on a Sunday morning, taking a 30 mile round trip to buy the newspapers. Who cares! The Porsche is our 2nd ‘Investorcollector’ car

Buy the wrong one and you will have a black hole in which to throw money! But, buy a good one and Oh My!

This well presented example showing circa 113,508 on the odometer is offered in good condition and is one of the most sought after models of this iconic ‘yuppie’ car of the 1980s. Superb to look at from every angle, the howl of its powerful five litre V8 mated to its transmission is a triumph of German engineering and exciting to drive both on country roads and relaxing on longer journeys. Recently the 928 has been serviced and has had an extensive respray and as such looks fantastic. The 928 has recently been treated to a service including a new cambelt and water pump as well as new torque bearings, and a fresh MoT. The history file contains various sundry invoices, MoT records and the current UK V5C registration document. Rare, desirable, and highly collectable!

1969 Land Rover Series 2A Guide price £13-£16K and just 5,850 miles

SVA Says: Early ‘Landy’s’ like this and the series 1 are very very desirable at this time, for two reasons. 1: As a stand-alone classic car to potter about town in the Summer (Forget them in Winter), they are great, these cars dont do long distances in any comfort and the driving experience if you are used to driving a car with modern steering with scare you to death! 2: You can buy one, upset the purists and buy a huge range of parts and accessories from people like Rimmer Bros to make it your own. Give it a good colour and you have a hyper attractive 4x4byFar of interest to young and old! The best part of all is that whether you leave it or funk it up, you wont lose a single penny in our view!

The only car in the world that looks cool with patina and dents!

This very original model is offered with good patina including still having its elephant hide vinyl to the front three seats  and rear bench seats, original chassis and is fitted with a tow bar and electrics. Its paintwork is as expected of a vehicle this age its four cylinder engine is running well according to the vendor. These are great ‘work horses’ and this model is known as possibly the hardiest of all Land Rovers, used worldwide in a multitude of terrains. Reasonably priced, this Land Rover is ready to be used for the reasons it was manufactured!

1965 Ford Mustang Coupé Guide price £13-£16K

SVA Says: Everyone loves the Ford Mustang, one of the most fun and iconic cars from the USofA. They are great to drive, very practical and that engine has the sublime rumble of a giants belly at dinner time.. Sit at the traffic lights next to a V8 AMG Mercedes burbling away and I bet the driver looks at you with envy, because their car is cool, but your is hyper-cool!

Very affordable to buy and own and completely timeless as a cool collectible classic car

This example is presented in pale yellow with black interior and is fitted with a 289ci V8 engine mated to an automatic gearbox. The car was imported in 2014 and has been looked after extremely well by the present owner. Its paintwork is in good condition as is the interior, including the headlining. These are great fun and with its rumbling V8 which sounds fantastic, it is a joy to drive.
